MICHAËL WINKEL
Labyrinths of love, lust, death and destruction
The visual biography of a turbulent life
Michaël Winkel was a visual artist from Dordrecht (the Netherlands), where he lived and worked his entire life. He was a virtuoso draughtsman, printmaker, and painter who exhibited nationally and internationally.
From a young age, his vivid imagination stood out, with work recalling Hieronymus Bosch (ca. 1450–1516) through its mix of grim and comic elements.
Winkel was a withdrawn man who struggled with depression and had limited contact with others. He communicated mainly through his art.
His work reveals a dark, symbolic, and highly imaginative world where reality and dream merge. Themes are often unsettling and sometimes erotic, but always technically accomplished.
His extensive body of work forms a visual biography of his life as an artist and human being.
